As a doula, my work is built on four values: Responsibility, Sustainability, Curiosity, and Inclusivity. To care for a birthing person and their family is to care about the world they are birthing into. I'm aware that declaring my political allegiance and activity may well turn some people off engaging with or even hiring me, but then, they are obviously not my people, I'm not talking to them! The world you are birthing in matters, from the literal home, to the systems that support you (the NHS and maternity in general) to the local provision for support and care in Cheshire East, to the national and international impact of climate change and the environmental crisis. That is why I talk about my commitment to Green Party politics within my doula communication. This is who am and this and you are why I do all that I do.
Taking Responsibility Beyond the Birth Room
My principle of Responsibility is about more than just showing up on time; it’s about personal agency. I provide the tools and information so that you can own your journey and make confident, informed decisions. True choice is a hollow concept if the system itself is broken. I take responsibility to advocate for a maternity system that is well funded, staffed, functional, and focused on the person, not the process. Engaging with the Green Party is how I "show up fully" for the midwives, the doctors, and the families who are currently being let down.
A Sustainable Future for New Life
Sustainability in my practice means supporting you in a way that respects your personal resources and energy, preventing the burnout that so often comes with early parenthood. In my mind sustainability must also be literal. We are bringing children into a world facing an unprecedented climate crisis. By supporting the Greens, I am fighting for the clean air, safe water, and the stable climate that every baby deserves. It is an act of love to ensure that the environment that we are a part of is as protected and nourished as the arms that hold us.
Curiosity and the Rejection of "One-Size-Fits-All"
My Curiosity is what allows me to see you as an individual, to learn your specific wishes, fears, and needs. Modern politics often feels like a machine that ignores the nuances of human life. The Green Party, however, champions grassroots, person-centred care that mirrors my own approach. We shouldn't be forcing families into rigid, industrial models of birth; we should be curious enough to build a society that adapts to the diverse reality of people's lives and allows people to make their own decisions, fully informed even if we ultimately disagree with them.
Inclusivity as a Radical Act of Safety
Finally, Inclusivity is the thread that binds it all together. Every family deserves to feel physically and emotionally safe, yet we know that maternal mortality rates and access to care are skewed by race, class, and identity. In my practice, I work to bridge that gap. In my politics, I support the Green Party because they recognize that social justice is reproductive justice. We cannot have a healthy society until the most marginalised among us are safe, seen, and supported.
The World We Build Together
Politics isn’t an abstract debate happening in Parliament; it is the air your baby breathes, the funding of the midwife holding your hand, and the respect given to your choices. I will not separate the work I do at your side from the work needed to fix the world around us.
When we work together, you get someone who shows up for you with full heart, deep curiosity, and unwavering respect for your autonomy. But you also get someone who is actively fighting for a maternity system and a climate that supports your family long after our time together ends.
